Matagalpa, known as the “Pearl of the North“, is one of the tourist destinations of the Ruta del Café, offering four protected ecological zones (Apante Natural Reserve, Cerro Arenal Natural Reserve, Cerro Frío-La Cumplida Natural Reserve, Yasica River Natural Reserve), which historical, cultural, and religious heritage gives it high potential for the development of tourism as an activity that generates jobs, income and foreign currency. However, in these places there are particular combinations of fauna and flora, which include endemic species and subspecies. Matagalpa is known for its good coffee, its cattle, milk products, vegetables, flowers and mountains popular with ecotourists.
Matagalpa features 57 tourism resources, many of them in the category of attractions, of which 16 are natural resources, 26 historical-cultural resources, and 15 are socio-economic resources. In this regard, we find four natural reserves, waterfalls, coffee farms, petroglyphs, history, culture and crafts specific to the territory. Also, there are cultural and safe recreation centers where you can enjoy the joy of youth, with sports games, as well as cultural nights at the “Heroes and Martyrs Cultural Center,” and the National Culture Theater, where artistic groups feature their music, art and culture.
Matagalpa is a department with a fresh climate, where culture, nature and history blend to provide an unforgettable tourism experience.
