Visas and Immigration

No matter how you are arriving in Central America, always carry valid travel papers. Check the information on consular visas.

Flying to Central America

European airlines such as Air France, KLM, British Airways, Lufthansa, and Iberia, traveling from Paris, Amsterdam, London, Frankfurt, and Madrid, have direct flights to Central America (Panamá, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Guatemala), making excellent connections with the other Central American capitals via intra-regional flights.

British Airways flies directly from London to San José, Costa Rica; Iberia flies from Madrid to San Salvador, Guatemala City, San José, and Panamá. Air France has direct flights from Paris to San José and Panamá City. Lufthansa flies from Frankfurt to Panamá City and Condor from Munich and Frankfurt to San José, Costa Rica and KLM from Amsterdam to Panamá City. Starting in 2017, the airline Air Europa will fly between Madrid and San Pedro Sula, Honduras, and the airline Edelweiss will fly between Zurich, Switzerland and San José, Costa Rica.

It is important to note that the main European airlines have excellent connections to the main airports in the United States, and these flights are operated in conjunction with the main North American airlines such as American Airlines, Delta and United Airlines among others, which offer excellent itineraries and routes to Central America.

Currencies in Central America

As a general rule, in all countries of Central America the US dollar is widely accepted. The only country that does not have its own currency is El Salvador, which is governed by the US dollar. International airports in each Central American country offer windows for currency exchange. Likewise, you can access the currency exchange service at the main banks in each country, and their branches in the main cities.

Travel Advisories COVID-19

COVID-19 (Coronavirus) has spread rapidly throughout the world, a consequence of the millions of movements that take place daily on the planet. Because all the countries that make up the Central American Integration System (SICA) region have registered positive cases of the disease, the corresponding national authorities have taken a series of measures to counter the spread of the virus and the economic impact in each one of the countries.

In summary, the main provisions are:

  • Monitoring and applying of the health protocols recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).
  • Closure of air, land, and sea borders in the eight countries of the region. The only exceptions are to guarantee the flow of goods and humanitarian flights.
  • Establishment of quarantines and mobility restrictions within each of the territories.
  • Financial measures to ease tax burdens, bank, mortgage, and service payments, as well as the provision of financial aid to the informal sector directly affected by restrictive mobility measures.
  • Measures to lessen the impact on the dynamic sectors of the economies.
