Corn Island

The municipality of Corn Island belongs to the Autonomous Region of the South Caribbean Coast and is divided into two small islands, with a total area of just nine square kilometers, with an estimated population of 7,500 people.

Corn Island is on the Caribbean coast and one of the most popular beach destinations in Nicaragua. The island is famous for its white sand beaches, turquoise water and perfect warm climate. The largest island has a series of extensive and wide beaches where you can swim, dive or practice snorkeling and take photos of the local marine fauna.

Corn Island's beaches are well-known for its crystal clear and calm waters for most of the year. Its main beaches are Long Bay, Sally Peachie, North End and South West Bay and Blowing Rock, this is located to the south of the big island and is an ideal site for diving due to the rich marine life.

The small island is surrounded by an extensive coral reef that can be seen with the naked eye from three meters. It is also an incredible destination for rest and relaxation; there are no gas cars here, so the air is clean and quiet.

A culinary experience also awaits. Coconuts are in abundance, allowing locals to create culinary delights with the fruit. For example, locals use coconut oil for the preparation of gallo pinto, as well as for crab soup and coconut bread. The best-known local dish is the rundown and the crab soup.

History tells us that on August 27, 1941, on the orders of Queen Victoria the act of the abolition of slavery was read and to celebrate the local people prepared crab soup, which is what they do until now to commemorate that day every August 27. To commemorate the date, locals from the big island celebrate with festivals and various types of entertainment; this is a perfect time to visit and get immerse in local culture and flavors.

You can get to Corn Island by plane or boat. You can fly from the capital city of Managua or travel by sea from the seaside town of Bluefields.
